Distance learning

Advances in information and communication technologies are expanding access to distance learning.

Distance learning is sequential independent or group learning(s), where learners and the teacher or lecturer are separated by distance and/or time, and where communication and collaboration and learning materials are delivered through information and communication technologies (ICT). Distance learning is divided into three types according to learning time.

  • Distance learning that takes place at a fixed time and sometimes at a fixed location, for example through video or audio conferencing, is called synchronous.
  • Asynchronous distance learning takes place anywhere, anytime, using ICT or email. Asynchronous distance learning makes it easier to balance work, family and study.
  • Blended distance learning has elements of synchronous and asynchronous learning (Simonson, Smaldino, Albright, Zvacek, 2008).

Distance learning is most useful for people who:

  • can't come to the training centre;
  • are working and want to upgrade or gain a qualification or degree;
  • travelling extensively (pursuing a career in sport, music or art)
  • in hospital or sanatorium;
  • are very gifted;
  • have specific psychological communication problems, etc.
